Attending any church for the first time can be nerve-racking. We understand the questions that can run through your mind, so we want you to feel comfortable when you visit.
The questions below are the more common questions people may have. If you don’t see your question listed, please call the church at 677-9357, or contact us for more information. We’ll be happy to assist you.
When are the service times?
We worship every Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Abiding Word is a liturgical church—a structured worship format. The service typically lasts 60 minutes.
How do I get to Abiding Word?
Abiding Word is located at 8470 Landen Drive in Maineville, OH.
We are across the street from the Landen shopping center. For detailed directions, please fill out the form entitled, "Get Directions to Our Church," located in the left column.
What should I wear?
We are simply glad to have you join us! You are our honored guests whether you come casual or wear dress clothes.
Where should I park?
Ample parking is available on site.
I have young children. Where should they go?
We love to have all age groups worship together. We are a family! We want everyone to feel a part of that family for the most important thing we do together—worship the Lord. Far from being a distraction, we feel that children enhance our experiences during worship.
We strive to make family worship as convenient as possible. The pews in the back of the worship area are intended for those with small children. There are also bags of “soft toys” for young children available next to the pews in the back of the worship area.
If you become concerned that your little one might be a distraction—we understand. We do have a staffed nursery available for children up to three years old. After you arrive at the church, simply speak with an usher. He will direct you to the nursery. Then one of our volunteers will meet you there and allow you to return to the worship service.
Are you handicap accessible?
Our building is completely handicap accessible.
Is there special assistance for the hearing and/or visually impaired?
For the hearing impaired, we have access to special hearing devices that allow you to control the volume. If you think this would be beneficial, please call the church office (677-9357) before your visit. The devices are not on-site, so it is important to call ahead so the hearing devices are available when you visit.
For the visually impaired, we offer large print materials so you can participate in every aspect of the worship service and Bible study. When you come, please let an usher know your needs.
What about the offering?
When you visit, please do not feel obligated to support our ministry. You are our guests, and no one expects you to make a donation.
For those who consider Abiding Word their church home, we do encourage prayerful, first-fruit, proportionate, and regular donations. Our offerings are given to further the work of God’s kingdom here at Abiding Word and around the world through the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS).
May I participate in Holy Communion at Abiding Word, or in any WELS or ELS congregation?
Abiding Word, a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), and our fellow church organization in America, the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS), do practice closed communion. Here’s a brief explanation.
As Lutheran Christians, we believe the Lord’s Supper offers many blessings. We actually receive the body and blood of the Lord Jesus, along with bread and wine.
While the Lord’s Supper grants many blessings, there are warnings in Scripture against taking the Supper in an unworthy manner. (1 Corinthians 11:27-29) Before you join us at the Lord’s table we want you to fully understand what you are doing, so that you may receive this Sacrament to your benefit.
The Lord’s Supper also gives you a wonderful opportunity to make a public statement about what you believe. No one says anything, but our actions during communion send a message. The message is simply this—when we come forward for communion at Abiding Word, we are showing everyone we agree with everything Abiding Word, a member of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS), teaches about the Bible.
As a visitor we believe it would be unloving to ask that you express your agreement with us until you have an opportunity to learn what we believe, teach, and confess.
Please know that closed communion is not a judgment against your saving faith in Jesus as the Savior.
We want you to be united with us in our beliefs about God’s Word. We want you to enjoy the blessings the Lord’s Supper affords. So we welcome the opportunity to sit down with you and discuss our beliefs in more detail. This will allow you to see if our church truly does teach everything the Bible teaches—no more and no less (Deut. 4:2).
